Chris Thomas
Principal Trombonist, Buy As You View Band
Trombone Tutor, National Youth Brass Band of Wales

Chris has been Principal Trombone of the Buy As You View Band, one of the finest brass bands in the world, for the last five years.

A product of the former Mid Glamorgan Music Service, Chris took up the trombone in secondary school and moved up through the various ensembles, before becoming a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Wales in 1984. It was during his time at the NYBBW, under the tutelage of Roger Harvey, that great progress was made and he became a member of the Sun Life Band in Bristol.

Chris became British trombone champion in 1989 and this led to an invitation to join the Williams Fairey Band under the direction of Major Peter Parkes.

In 1992, Chris became British Open Solo Champion, earning the right to represent the UK at the International Brass Musician of the Year contest in Auckland, New Zealand. Chris won that contest (the first trombonist to ever win these prestigious events) and went on to repeat his British success the following year. A period playing, recording and touring with ensembles as diverse as the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, The Black Dyke Band, The Fodens Band, and performance artists KLF, led to an invitation to join the Buy As You View Cory Band in May 2000.

Since then, he has been involved in two British Open wins, one National win and a host of other titles and accolades. Chris also features as soloist on no less than seven CD recordings. Details of these can be found on the Buy As You View website.

As a soloist, Chris has performed at all of the UK’s most prestigious venues and has premiered new concerti by Alun Hoddinott and Gareth Wood with the National Youth Brass Band of Wales.

"My Edwards trombone produces so many different tone colours; it’s an absolute joy to play. I wouldn’t change it for anything!"
