Richard Ashmore
Principal Bass Trombonist, Ulster Orchestra
Richard is the Principal Bass Trombone with the Ulster Orchestra.
Based in Northern Ireland for the last six years Richard has
committed the majority of his time to playing in the orchestra,
but dedicates a lot of his spare time into his other passion,
education. Richard is heavily involved in the field of education
throughout Northern Ireland and also spends a great deal of time
giving masterclasses and performing recitals around the UK with
support from Edwards UK @ theValve.
After starting playing at the age of five, Richard quickly progressed
through the local education system becoming principal bass trombone
of the National Childrens Orchestra and principal trombone of
the National Childrens Wind Orchestra by the mid-80's. This led
onto the National Youth Orchestra where he was principal Bass
Trombone from 1988-91, studying with Peter Gane and Eric Crees
and working with some of the world's finest conductors and soloists.
By 1989 he was working extensively around the Midlands as a free-lance
orchestral player along side his long-time teacher Simon Hogg
(Fine Arts Brass Ensemble). Following time out to gain a degree
in Environmental Science, Richard was encouraged to return to
music as a career, resulting in a year spent on a post-graduate
course at the Royal Academy of Music studying with Bob Hughes
(LSO).
After returning to the free-lance scene of the Midlands, and
a contract with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Richard started
to work with orchestras such as the English Symphony Orchestra,
the Halle Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool
Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra
and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales with whom he can be seen
and heard on numerous TV, radio, and CD recordings.
After taking the job with the Ulster Orchestra in 1999, he has
also taken teaching positions with Queens University Belfast,
the Belfast School of Music and the University of Ulster. He
also runs education workshops and shows around the country through
the education department of the Ulster orchestra.

"I chose to play an Edwards in 1997, after
spending two days at the Edwards factory in Elkhorn, Wisconsin
working with John Winkle to put together my ideal trombone.
No other company could offer me a custom made instrument which
would compliment my playing and allow me to produce the exact
sound and feel that I wanted. The addition of a player such
as David Holt at EdwardsUK @theValve, who has a superb knowledge
of the qualities of each individual part of the instrument,
to help with the choices of parts and give an unbiased viewpoint
on sound is also unique, and has proven invaluable in recently
modifying my instrument. I have also found their after-sales
service to be the best that I have come across."
